Youngkin’s partisan attack sours powerful Va. Democrat on new arena

Senate Finance and Appropriations Chairwoman L. Louise Lucas (D-Portsmouth) said Youngkin’s remarks were just the latest misstep by the governor — “mistake No. 12,” she called it in a Capitol Square news conference — that she said has doomed the project.

Soon after Youngkin’s team posted those remarks on social media Saturday, Lucas tweeted that she would not docket his bill, which seeks to lure the professional hockey and basketball teams from the District to Potomac Yard in Alexandria.

A House of Delegates committee advanced its version of the bill Friday, which would create a sports and entertainment authority to oversee construction of the arena. It would be the centerpiece of a 12-acre mixed-use complex with a concert hall, underground parking, a conference center, a Wizards practice facility, and corporate offices and media studio for Monumental Sports & Entertainment.
